Sketches and studies from the wild…

Lucky enough to be standing in the Rocky Mountains of Colorado, I was able to capture this majestic bull elk crossing over a ridge, bugling and pushing his harem of cows to a new location. So I sat and did a quick acrylic study.

There’s nothing like a winter moment in Minnesotas’ Boundary Waters where I was walking a path in the north woods and grabbed a quick glimpse of a grey Timberwolf crossing my path. I knew he wouldn’t stay bedded down, but what a memory for me!

My wife and I traveled out to South Dakota to Custer State Park to be able to enjoy the yearly Buffalo Round-Up. We arrived days before the actual event just to see the buffalo in their natural environment. It didn’t disappoint at all. Looking over the plains, mountains, prairies, one is guaranteed to see these bold creatures grazing. So, I grabbed my sketchbook and watercolors and quickly painted this image.

A large Indiana whitetail buck following the scent of a doe caught my attention during the fall rut. He was on a mission and didn’t care if I was there or not. This charcoal and colored pencil rendering captured that moment.
